Which science fiction depiction of time travel has the best chance of working?

OK I’ve put this one off for long enough its time to give my opinion on time travel.

There are different ways to time travel.

Using a time travel device, going back in time is purely B to the S. I put this issue right up there with Ghosts. If it existed, we would be seeing it everywhere and throughout all of time. Thus, any movie depicting the ability to travel back in time is not going to get a ton of interest as for actually working. This cancels out all of the Project Almanac types.

As Micheal Keegan Key would say “Dont F- with time.”

The next type of time travel movies are the time loop movies. My favorite is Arc. Of course this seems as ridiculous as the ones going back to the future. But, the majority of these movies have some device that created the loop. Since a loop would ultimately be restrained to a certain area, this would be much more probable. There would be no way to tell outside the loop.

Another time travel movie type gives the character the ability to go back and change things. Butterfly Effect, and About time are the gems in this genre. BE has 3 movies and all three are well worth the watch. About time is more of a love story, where some kid uses this awesome ability to talk to a girl, Rick and Morty ripped off this movie. And DC created a character just for this, the Flash.

butterfly effect

(in chaos theory) the phenomenon whereby a minute localized change in a complex system can have large effects elsewhere.

The Butterfly Effect 2 (2006) — IMDb

The Butterfly Effect 2: Directed by John R. Leonetti. With Eric Lively, Erica Durance, Dustin Milligan, Gina Holden. Nick Larson discovers a supernatural way to alter his life and travel back in time to key moments in his life by looking at photographs.

Going forward in time is the most likely to have a chance of working. Many movies deal with stasis, suspended animation and since the body ceases to have effects of time, this would still be considered time travel. If you look at what we consider coordinates, x,y, and z. All of which are a function of t, time. If the x, y, or z where to move, this would be considered travelling, so why not if only the t was to change?

So now that we know which movies we are looking for, how about that list:

Passengers — Two people are awoken from stasis to take care of the damage the ship encountered. They ended up aging 80 years, while the rest of the passengers did not age. So I would consider the other passengers time travelers, and this has a chance of working.

Oh yea, forgot about the stupidest movie ever made in the history of making movies, in this piece of doodoo, a linguist is brought in to communicate with aliens. WTF, a linguist cant talk to a dolphin or an elephant, so why the hell would you get one to talk to aliens, this movie is dumb. But eventually, the aliens, gave her the ability to see time in a non linear fashion, once again why would a linguist get this, but whatever. I guess this would be kind of a time travel movie, and sort of a possibility, but if you pick a linguist, I will move to China. This is a bad movie, dont listen to the critique, ratings and rotten tomatoes, I’m sure you can buy those entities if your budget was as large as this movie, with nothing on film to account for the expenditures. Yeah its pretty, but so is the IMAX version of the Serengeti, but it is not interesting, and they make dumb choices, like a Friday the 13th movie.

Arrival

Linguistics professor Louise Banks (Amy Adams) leads an elite team of investigators when gigantic spaceships touch down in 12 locations around the world. As nations teeter on the verge of global war, Banks and her crew must race against time to find a way to communicate with the extraterrestrial visitors. Hoping to unravel the mystery, she takes a chance that could threaten her life and quite possibly all of mankind.

Then there are the weird movies that really don’t mention time, but obviously there is a time component that seems to move. Not going in too far, I just wanted to mention the overall best movie anywhere near this genre…

Triangle — When Jess sets sail on a yacht with a group of friends, she cannot shake the feeling that there is something wrong. Her suspicions are realized when the yacht hits a storm and the group is forced to board a passing ocean liner to get to safety, a ship Jess is convinced she’s been on before. The ship appears deserted, the clock on board has stopped, but they are not alone… Someone is intent on hunting them down, one by one. And Jess unknowingly holds the key to end the terror.

*So I’ve watched this movie 20–30 times, and you can clearly tell that the girl knows she is in the loop the first time. The entire movie is just one of the infinite loops.

Made in 2009, that’s right, and still the best movie ever made, in this type of genre. And then there’s Old. Another gem, actually pretty good, but has a lot of flaws. But yet again, this movie was a complete rip off of another, even better, much more low budget movie, Time Trap.

Nearly forgot, but there is another type of time travel movie. In this genre, there is the ability to see or predict the future. FINALLY! Science being used to predict the future. While not very probable, in the fashion the movies use it, this is happening everyday by humans anyway. Time Lapse is one of the most entertaining movies in existence, no one will dislike this movie.

Edge of Tomorrow — I’m not going to review this one, because its Tom Cruise, and ANY movie he is in, is a good movie, sorry, this guy never disappoints. There are a lot of flaws in the plot, but remember its Tom Cruise! Oh and skip the Mummy or watch the Mummy and skip this… because they are basically the exact same movie, only with a different overall theme.

Did I mention Tom Cruise, well here is another top choice in the predicting the future genre. This time, like in Arrival, aliens posses the tech, but this is an enteraining movie, unlike Arrival.

Minority Report — If you like this movie, guess what, there was a TV show! It only lasted about 13 episodes, but it was awesome. Think Firefly, cancelled, but not for quality of the show, and the star of the show was beautiful, talented, and should have a better gig going right now than a small role on Shazam. Science has evolved to read brain synapses of those who have the ability to piece together future events.

A phone booth from the 80’s cannot travel through time,

Do we care if any of this makes any sense, hell no, give me more Terminator movies!

Terminator is an American media franchise created by James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd. The franchise encompasses a series of science fiction action films, comics, novels, and additional media, concerning a total war between Skynet’s synthetic intelligence — a self-aware military machine … See more

They vaguely make any sense, have nothing to with each other, and this series should be named Paradox, but who cares, I love the Terminator, John, and his mom. Can you believe they had Doctor Who and Khalisi in the same movie!

Predestination

Ok, these last two are in the trippy category, one is actually a guy/girl hermaphrodite, going back in time to impregnate himself…AND give birth to himself! Yeah, I know, must watch!

And the other, this is not really a time travel movie, but there is an aspect of time travel included, but to be honest this is simply my favorite move of all time regardless of genre, hands down a 10 out of 10 for science nuts like me:

Coherence

*This movie is so trippy, you dont realize from the very start, she is in the wrong house, also, it comes to a point that we dont know which Emily we are following or how many are there actually. Once again, took me 20–30 watches, and I love this movie.
